Welcome to the BEd Master of Teaching Program

The BEd Master of Teaching Program is first and foremost based on the practice of inquiry. Inquiry refers to a way of learning that requires of the student to actively question, to conduct research and interpret a wide range of materials. Inquiry is the ability to draw connections between theories and particular experiences and realities, to converse meaningfully with others and to begin to build a defensible understanding and demonstration of teaching practice. It is the ability to practice learning as inquiry that provides, we believe, the strongest foundation for teaching as an ongoing and evolving practice.

While we believe that good teaching practice can be learned, we also believe that it cannot be learned without the student teacher’s active engagement in inquiry. Learning to become a teacher is not simply a process of “knowing what”, but also requires “knowing how.” And knowing how requires a deeper understanding of oneself as a learner, and an understanding of multiple and diverse ways of knowing and action. From this perspective, teaching as a practice is not just received as knowledge, but must be actively enacted and brought into being.

News & Announcements

2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the first graduating class from the new BEd Master of Teaching Program. Sixty brave souls volunteered in 1996 to become the "Prototype" group to pilot this new and innovative teacher preparation program. To celebrate their graduation in 1998 they commissioned a beautiful stain glass and mirrored pyramid into which they placed various artifacts of their time in the program (see picture above), with the idea that they pyramid would be opened on the 10th anniversary of their graduation. The pyramid has been resealed and remains in the Doucette Library of Teaching Resources on the 3rd Floor of the Education Block. If you are in the library, we invite you to take a look at it.
